We Are Fighting You Now – May 14, 2020

We are fighting you so we can breathe.

When Ami wrote these lyrics, she couldn’t know how fitting they would be during a global respiratory pandemic.

We Are Fighting You Now is the new single by Ami Saraiya & The Outcome that speaks to the surreal nature of our current cultural moment. The release is accompanied by an equally surreal animated video by Chicago multimedia artist Gretchen Hasse.

The video takes the viewer on a journey from the countryside, to the city, all the way to the bottom of the sea and the outer reaches of space, always pursued by and always fighting a faceless, insatiable beast. We are fighting those who would consume us, and the only answer is to keep loving, and keep fighting.

Animator Gretchen Hasse takes inspiration from the dreamlike, playful but sometimes disturbing imagery of The Yellow Submarine, the Beatles animated feature from 1968, another tumultuous year. Hasse works not only in animation, but also video, collage, comics and murals. Her work is primarily about resilience. She is drawn to stories and images that describe perseverance through pain, and knows that a dark sense of humor, a keen eye for social criticism, and the diligence to work for change are essential tools for survival

The Music Memory Project

How do we remember through music?

Two years ago a group of Chicago musician/composers took on the challenge of creating music based on intimate memories from their lives. The resulting compositions have been stewing in an archive since then but will be on display, along with images and writings about these memories, at the Hairpin on March 23rd.

The event will include gallery viewing as well as live performances by participating artists: Ronnie Malley, Rashida Phillips, Ami Saraiya, 80 Foots (Chris Schoen, Emmy Bean, and T-Roy Martin), and Joey Spilberg.

Additional performers performing memory-inspired songs: Anna Soltys, as well as Jenny and Robin Bienemann!!!

Doors will open at 7PM for viewing/listening, followed by live performances starting at 8PM.
